Anne Axford, associate director of learning and development at Portsmouth PCT, writes in the Health Service Journal about why stamping out dyslexia would be a mistake.

Famous dyslexic Sir Richard Branson has said about his condition: "Dyslexics are very good at looking at things differently, at seeing the big picture.  This means we see some things more clearly than people who aren’t dyslexic."

Other memorable dyslexics include Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Cruise and the co-founder of Hewlett Packard, William Hewlett.

Yale University has opined that dyslexia is "a source of exceptional creativity, innovation and higher level thinking."

I started having a think about "person specifications" in regard to finding the right people for the right job. The best person is innovative, creative, a lateral thinker, a visionary and someone who has the capacity to see "the bigger picture".

Julia Goodman (the founder of Personal Presentation Ltd) writes in the most recent HR & Training Journal that dyslexics think "outside the box" and have "a natural aptitude for compelling verbal communication, producing people who have the potential to inspire those around them with fresh vision".

Viewing the posts on a popular dyslexia site, I was interested in reading comments from people who had attended an event where it was proposed that the condition be "eradicated". Quite understandably, people were not very happy about being wiped out!

For those dyslexics applying for a job, Judith Sanson, executive director of Dyslexia Research, makes the suggestion that they tell the interviewer about their condition and tell them that; "this means that I work extra hard to reach the highest standards in my work; I walk the extra mile with added commitment; I see the wider picture and use my special gifts as someone who sees outside the box."
